A roundup of things that are 🔥🔥🔥
From finding your style late in life to Gen X queens on television to pop goddesses ruling the radio
📚 READ: Loved this long read in The Cut by Cathy Horyn, a fashion editor who at age 67 is finally figuring out who she is and how she wants to look. After a longtime career in an industry that demanded Horyn be thin, uncomfortable and au courant, it took liberating herself from those constraints to finally feel free. As Horyn puts it, "Not long ago, I was digging through old letters, photos, and diaries; I’ve kept everything, including journals I wrote between 1999 and 2003, my first years at the Times. What was most surprising to me was how much crap there was. Bridget Jones was right. I couldn’t believe how much time I wasted moaning over my empty love life or some dipshit boyfriend. One of the things nobody tells you in your 30s and 40s, when the dating sucks and you think you’ll be alone forever, is that the problem goes away in your 60s. You’re glad your time and choices are entirely your own. It may be my favorite decade of all."
📺 WATCH: So glad it's fall television season and there are some new and exciting shows to binge. My recommendations are The Serpent Queen (two seasons on Starz). As a Gen Xer, I'm a huge Samantha Morton fan from way back, but the guest appearance this season by Minnie Driver is icing on the cake for this dry and witty historical romp. I also highly recommend The English Teacher on Hulu featuring TikTok star Brian Jordan Alvarez. It's a modern take on school-based sitcoms, featuring a gay high school English teacher in Austin trying to balance the demands of the students and their parents.
🎶 LISTEN: There's also a lot of great new music out there, and pop is making a resurgence thanks to Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Doja Cat, and, of course, Beyonce and Taylor Swift. But the two albums I play repeatedly in my house and car and even when I work out are by Waxahatchee, a band led by lead singer Katie Crutchfield. I saw her live recently in Oakland and was blown away. I highly recommend listening to both Tiger's Blood (out in 2024) and Saint Cloud (out in 2020). And catch them on tour if you can.
👚 WEAR: As I've said in previous posts, if there was an adult version of Garanimals, my closet would be filled with them in different colors. Mixing and matching is not my strong suit. That's why I love this new skirt by Jenni Kayne that can be matched with an assortment of sweaters (15 percent off for first-time buyers on the website). I bought the skirt and sweater in brown, and you'll be seeing me in it a lot as soon as it's less than 80 degrees outside.
😋 EAT: I'm always looking for a delicious, easy snack that will contribute to my daily protein goals. I found these Kodiak Blueberry Thick and Fluffy Power Waffles in a magazine and now I have approximately 20 boxes of them in my freezer (they also come in vanilla). Pop them in the toaster, apply peanut butter, and you've just ingested a delicious 10 grams of waffle protein. However, it's imperative that you get the fat square waffles, not the round smaller ones. You're welcome.
Going to try everything in this roundup, esp the read, watch, listen…… actually all of it! Esp the waffles!
I love the Kodiak waffles - also good are the muffin mixes and protein snack mixes if you have time to whip them up. The lemon blueberry muffins are delish and there are protein balls you make with peanut butter and can refrigerate for the week for snacks.
