A roundup of things that are 🔥🔥🔥
From dressing like Misty Copeland to road-tripping with Will Ferrell to smelling like Taylor Swift
🗳️ ACTION: As a surrogate for the Harris/Walz campaign, I can tell you what they want and need from supporters is for us to join as many phonebanks as possible between now and November. By calling prospective voters, you can talk to them about why they should and how they can vote for not just Harris/Walz, but candidates up and down the ballot who will protect our safety and freedoms. You don't have to live in a swing state to make a difference in the outcome of the November elections—you can simply call into key states and persuade others to act in the best interests of all Americans. The campaign will provide you with training and then connect you directly to voters. Don't you want to wake up on November 6th knowing you left it all on the field?
👚 WEAR: In a post-pandemic world, I can no longer abide high heels, so I'm always on the hunt for a fancy flat. These Free People ballet flats fit the bill: satin or leather, square-toed and imminently comfortable, they come in over a dozen colors and arrive in a beautiful box. I bought them originally in pink and black, but I'm going back for more. True to size.
📺 WATCH: This weekend I plan to watch Will & Harper, the new documentary featuring Will Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele, who came out as a trans woman in 2021. The two met on the set of Saturday Night Live 30 years ago. Then, three years ago, Steele wrote an email to Ferrell saying that she was transitioning. Steele had been road-tripping the country for most of her adult life, so the friends decided to take a 16-day trip from New York to L.A. together to process this new stage of their friendship.
As the mom of a trans kid, I'm always grateful to people who try to help others understand that trans people aren't the enemy--hate and ignorance is: “I don’t want to sound like a politician or altruistic, but there is a lot of legislation being introduced in every state across the country and it’s still looking a little restrictive and maybe a little dire for trans people,” Steele told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s L.A. premiere on Thursday. “I don’t know if this movie is going to change hearts and minds, but you have to try to do something with your life and we felt like this might be useful.”
🛍️ SMELL: I love wearing subtle scents year-round, and because I'm a seventies baby, I am particularly fond of any perfume that smells like musk or sandalwood. Something that connotes, "I'm a hot lady in my thirties in a wrap dress getting in my station wagon and heading out to a key party." Mainly I wear two perfumes by Byredo--Ghost of No Man's Land in the Summer and Mojave Ghost in the Winter--but recently I saw a lip-reader online saying that Taylor Swift told someone at the Grammy's who complimented her perfume that she was wearing Tom Ford. So of course I went down an Internet rabbit hole to figure out specifically which Tom Ford perfume Taylor wears and learned it was "Santal Blush." Now, those of us who like perfume know that Santal 33 by Le Labo is very overdone—not only is it worn by every woman in New York, but it's even pumped into hotel lobbies through venting systems. But this santal perfume is a revelation—musky, sandalwoody and subtle. Highly recommend for modern-day rendezvous.
🖼️ ART: I'm spending the month of October in New York City (let me know if you have any things that are fire to share with me in NYC!), and I'm excited to go see “Mexican Prints at the Vanguard," a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. From screen prints and woodcuts to lithographs, the country’s tradition of printmaking, the exhibition focuses on works of the eighteenth to mid-twentieth century and how they've played a significant role in addressing political and social concerns. “Mexican Prints at the Vanguard” is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from September 12 through January 5, 2025.
Also, if you're going to be in Atlanta, don't miss the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit, “My New Yorks,” which is on its way from the Art Institute of Chicago to the High Museum. In the 1920s, O’Keeffe spent several years painting in New York City while living in the newly built Shelton Hotel, which was then the tallest residential skyscraper in the world. O'Keeffe created street-level compositions capturing the city’s monumental skyscrapers from below and suspended views looking down from her 30th-floor apartment, and called these works her “New Yorks.” "My New Yorks" is on view at the High Museum from October 25, 2024, through February 16, 2025.
I knew Santal 33 was overdone when Costco started selling it! Checking out the Tom Ford scent this weekend...
As the mom of a nonbinary child, I will tell you that Will and Harper made me laugh, cry and fume. I am waiting for my child to also watch and give me their perspective
