You're a dating coach who specializes in helping middle-aged women find partners. Tell us more about your work with women and how you gravitated towards this career.
I actually work with clients aged 25-81! But 50 percent of my business is helping women over 40 reinvent themselves and launch a new chapter in their love stories. Becoming a dating coach is the biggest plot twist of my life. Seven years ago, I left a marriage of 20 years and was tossed into the single life in New York City with not one clue about how to “do” dating. I decided to crack the code of online dating, and in the midst, I found my (new) husband, Brett, on Bumble. And then, I launched “Love, Amy” to help women across the country navigate the crazy world of dating.
What are some of the differences between dating before you’re 40 and after?
I find that younger women need help with the “warmth and validation” part of communicating and the in-person flirting part of dating. Women over 40 have this part down! They need more help navigating dating apps and the related banter that’s required.
How do you see women’s confidence and sexuality change in middle age?
We don’t have solid role models to show us that we can, in fact, feel more confident and sexy as we age. That’s the truth! Women just need permission to embrace their wisdom and sexuality. And that’s part of my job: helping women step into their confidence, sensuality, worth, and power.
What are middle-aged women looking for in a partner?
They’re looking for depth. They want someone who nurtures their happiness, joy, freedom, and dreams, someone who makes their wounds a love language, someone who prioritizes the relationship on a whole new level.
What three tips would you give women who want to find a partner?
1. Write a list of everything you want in a partner. Now, go through that list, and if there’s something on it that you don’t embody, make it your mission to become it.
2. Try the dating apps! Half of the women I work with find their partners on Hinge or Bumble.
3. Know this: being lovable is your birthright. You are lovable right here, right now, just as you are.
I've followed Amy for years and she is absolute magic! (Ever since her parenting books.) I love her kind, nuanced approach to dating and self-care in general.
