Will America make history this weekend with the the largest protest in our nation’s history? I’m cautiously optimistic about what these rallies will result in politically; as I wrote previously in this piece, no government has successfully withstood a challenge from 3.5 percent of its population mobilized in sustained, nonviolent resistance. Whether you’re attending a No Kings rally in person or cheering them on from the sidelines, remember that joy is vital to successful activism. Let me know in the comments what brought you joy this week.

📺 Watching
English Teacher: The second season is out! This FX television show, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez as Evan Marquez, a gay high school English teacher navigating the complex challenges of working at a Texas high school, is a witty and dry portrayal of school life, balancing satire and sincerity. And it only features music from the 80s. What’s not to like?
RHOSLC: I watch almost every single Housewives franchise, and I can confirm that The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is the most unpredictable and entertaining reality series in the Bravo franchise thanks to its mix of emotional confessions and outrageous “friend” feuds. Come for the insults, stay for the non-stop drama.
🎧 Listening
Ace by Madison Cunningham: Reviewers are calling this Madison Cunningham’s best album yet, offering an honest reflection of personal transformation and resilience that resonates on every track. Her new album navigates themes of heartbreak, forgiveness, and rebuilding.
Fatal Optimist by Madi Diaz: I’m such a huge Madi Diaz fan, and her latest album is a raw and introspective masterpiece that rounds out her heartache trilogy. Stripped down to intimate arrangements centered around her voice and acoustic guitar, the album captures the aftermath of a significant break-up.
📚 Reading
“Awake”: Jen Hatmaker is a delight, in person and on the page. I was recently on Jen’s podcast and we did a virtual event together about menopause, and what is so endearing about her is that she’s always unguarded. Awake is no exception. Her raw, fearless memoir turns Jen’s personal devastation into a meditation on truth and transition. Th'e prose is both biting and gentle, capturing the bewilderment of midlife and becoming fully awake to one’s body, choices, and freedom. It’s one of the year’s best memoirs so far.
“Strong Ground”: Brene Brown is also a delightful human. I recently did a book event with her in Houston and 500 of our closest friends. Brene’s new book, Strong Ground, is a timely guide to leadership in a chaotic world. As always, Brene blends rigorous research with storytelling, and shares accessible and actionable ideas for cultivating resilience and confidence. Ultimately, all authority comes from authenticity, and Strong Ground is a valuable guide for anyone committed to using their own unique values, abilities and desires to lead others through uncertainty.
🛍️ Buying
Mari jeans by AG: The Mari jeans by AG are a mid-rise slim straight leg style that have a flattering fit and clean, leg-elongating lines—even for the shorties like me. I’ve worn this jean for over a decade, and it’s always in style in every color and length.
Suede jacket by Mango: Brown and suede are in this season, so I splurged on this cute and cozy jacket by Mango. Dress it up or down, it will look amazing and keep you warm.
🇺🇸 Going
The No Kings rally on October 18 is a nationwide peaceful protest against the authoritarian overreach and corruption by President Trump’s administration. The rallies are planned in over 2,500 locations nationwide, from large cities to small towns. To attend, find a nearby event through organizing groups such as Indivisible or Reproductive Freedom for All. Bring your funniest and most poignant signs and speak up for democracy. Given the government shutdown, this is a critical moment for Americans to reject authoritarianism en masse.
