Dear Shannon, your letter comes at an interesting time as I'm going through this right now. This weekend I'm performing a puppet play for grown-ups. It's a lifelong dream, and at age 49, I decided it was time! I've been such a 'serious' person, so focused on outcomes, I never made space for this dream. I took two classes in hand puppetry through the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival in 2024 and 2025, practiced, made puppets from cloth and yarn, built a stage, and now I'm performing. I'll report back after I actually perform, but the experience has been so freeing. My suggestion for anyone craving more play is to surround yourself with people who believe in you (for me, exec coach Jadey Ryndak was key), let go of the fear and embarrassment and prioritize the experience of joy and 'flow.'

I saw a post yesterday that said, "The world needs more people who wave at crows, thank the rivers, and talk to cats like equals." I think that's very true. I do it at protests, when a car drives by with a dog in it I shout, "Puppies for Democracy!" and wave wildly at it. It makes me feel like we're in a secret club and it makes the child in me very happy.
