Thank you for this conversation - I only know of Jennifer Siebel Newsom's work from a distance (have always been impressed), and her tender view of service reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that Heal, by Rachel Naomi Remen:
"When you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of the soul."
Keep up the flamingly wonderful work, @ShannonRWatts. #firestarter
Thank you both so much for this inspiring conversation! You have no idea how this resonated with me. I found my healing from a life-threatening eating disorder, working first as a teenage volunteer with Vietnamese refugees in the Bronx in the 70s, and then as a refugee resettlement counselor with the International Rescue Committee, continuing to this day, teaching English to immigrants and refugees. My life was changed forever by focusing on others instead of myself and being of service. I’m an author as well. My novel, Weeping Under This Same Moon chronicles this time. I speak at many high schools and middle schools to students who have read my book and we discuss the importance of being of service, volunteerism, and of course friendship. I am moved by and so grateful for your conversation. And guess what, I just became a granny!
