A roundup of things that were 🔥🔥🔥 at the DNC
A music remix of a viral comment, all the DNC fashion, an empowering interview, and more
Last week’s Democratic National Convention showcased plenty of 🔥🔥🔥, here’s just a sampling of some of the things I experienced during my five days in Chicago.
MICHELLE OBAMA: Our former First Lady gave an incredibly impassioned speech that resulted in some of the most viral clips of the entire convention, including a music remix of her comment on Trump seeking “one of those black jobs.”
GUS WALZ: In one of the most tender moments of the whole convention, Gus Walz, the son of Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, stood up with tears streaming down his face, saying “That’s my dad!”
Naturally, plenty of people on the right took the opportunity to shame a kid who’s neurodivergent and has learning disabilities. Most specifically, Ann Coulter tweeted that Gus is “weird” (she has since taken down her post). My tweet responding to Coulter’s attack went viral.
DNC FASHION: During the joy-filled DNC, the attendees really stepped up their fashion game. Check out some of the best dressed, and more in-depth thoughts about DNC fashion in the Substack newsletter
.Here’s a sampling of some of my own DNC fashion (only flats, no heels).
ROLL CALL: Unlike the funereal RNC roll, the DNC’s was both exciting and emotional as each state chose their own theme and song. Lil’ John for Georgia really took it up a notch.
CONVERSATIONS: I was honored to get to interview Gloria Johnson, a retired special education teacher and State Representative from Knoxville running against Marsha Blackburn for a US Senate seat. During a discussion hosted by Emerge and The Meteor, we talked about the state of gun violence and racism in her home state, and how women are key to protecting American democracy.
If you watched the DNC, what stood out to you?
That Michelle Obama remix is a banger. 🔥
Definitely Gus Walz’s joyful tears & pride in his father stood out to me as the most endearing and memorable moment from the DNC. As a parent, watching a child’s emotional support for his dad was just beautiful. At the time, I had no idea he is neurodivergent, and it shouldn’t matter. Shame on Republicans for making fun of him.
And of course, all the JOY! Watching at home and then talking with friends about our favorite moments throughout the week was so uplifting and energizing! I am so happy to have hopeful & joyful reasons to vote - not out of fear. I haven’t felt this was since 2008. It’s incredible!!
