My son was one at the time. I threw up and went home and held him. He is now 12. I have a new baby and think of how far we've come in ten years. The occurrence, the desensitization. And then I remember you and I think of the advocacy, the movement, the real changes. THANK YOU.
In the mid 90s I realized that our federal snd state legislators were passing bad laws that put all our lives at risk. The US Congress amended the federal budget to prohibit the CDC from researching the root causes of gun violence. My state, Kentucky, passed a law prohibiting anyone in government from destroying guns. Instead they had to be resold at auction. I naively thought people would stand up and speak out against these bad laws. Here in KY our Louisville Police Chief did speak against the resale of crime guns, but he was ignored. I didn’t know how to speak out myself in the political realm, and I had no allies. In the wake of Sandy Hook, I found you, Shannon, and I’ve learned how to speak out against bad laws and so much more. Thank you for your leadership! We’re keeping the fires burning! 🔥
This is such a critical backstory and inspiring vision. And I know this is a collective effort, from driving policy change and legislative action to transforming the political landscape to igniting intergenerational change and ultimately a new cultural paradigm, but you have always been the vital heroine. Your influence...your impact...your flame...will prove eternal. ✊🙏
