I’ve worked in mental health for over ten years in various capacities, including crisis intervention and assessment. I worked in emergency departments, psychiatric hospitals, and detention centers. Secondary trauma is absolutely something I’ve experienced and I learned early on that everyone (including and especially myself) has their own threshold to what they can tolerate when it comes to hearing, seeing, and empathizing with the struggles and suffering of others. Only you can know your threshold and then you have to protect it in order to stay engaged; not turn away. I absolutely loved this piece.
