💬 Thursday Thread: What obligations are standing in the way of your desires?
And do you even know what you want?
In case you missed it this week:
I had a thought-provoking conversation with
on Substack Live.I shared an excerpt from my book, “Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark Into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age,” about the importance of building a “bonfire,” a community of likeminded women.
And don’t forget, you only have until June 17 to order my book and enroll for FREE in Firestarter University, a year-long, online course based on “Fired Up.”
Keep scrolling for this week’s Thursday Thread…
One of the things women are taught in life is to fulfill their obligations, while men are taught to follow their desires. We get so overwhelmed by all of the things we “should” be doing that we don’t stop to think about what it is that we actually want. But when we start to ignore the “shoulds” and give ourselves the permission to pursue what we desire, we begin building a life from the inside out, not the outside in. And given the state of the world right now, that in itself is a radical—even political—act.
👉 For today’s Thursday Thread, here’s what I want to know:
What are your dormant desires?
What are the obligations or shoulds standing in the way of going after what you want?
Welcome to the Thursday Threads, a weekly chance for us to connect with one another in the comments. Join me and other readers as we navigate important discussions. And a note: a difference of opinion is always okay, being unkind to one another is not. Let’s keep these conversations respectful.

I was just having this same discussion with a friend. We are in our 60's, and still running around like madwomen, as we have our whole lives. We need a complete mindset change - for us and for our daughters (and granddaughters!). WE must be our first priority, and that is not the way we were raised, so it's a cultural shift too. My current screen saver is "Less browsing, more doing, less noise, less watching. More painting, less scrolling, more drawing". I'm going to make my 63rd trip around the sun more about me, come hell or high water.
I want to be my own boss and be paid what I’m worth. Current job and family responsibilities are standing in the way. Self care as well. Where is there time when those things come first? Self care being sleep and exercise which are non negotiable for mental health. When work, taking care of children and self care is done, there is maybe an hour left in the day ? 🤣🤣. I’m still determined, logistics aside!
