Right on time -- just left the distribution hub some mom friends and I organized for folks who lost everything in the Eaton/Altadena fire. When my shift ended I didn't want to leave... none of us quite know what to do with ourselves, but finding ways to help is always the answer.
I worked as a National Certified Pharmacy Tech and Immunizer for 13 years when I started hating my job. Too much corporate BS. Than I was diagnosed with a tumor behind my eye then a brain aneurysm, along with debilitating migraines. the first of which lasted one whole year without going away for even a day. During that 13th year of working and being diagnosed with these issues I felt like my life was over. That is when I found Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) and started my volunteer work. I became involved with 3 other organizations and volunteered with those also. I couldn't get enough of getting involved in the political world and fighting to do what was right for our country. I finally knew what I was meant to do, and that was to be an Activist. Now I am retired, after leaving my jobe of 16 years, earlier than I had to due to my health issues, and I devote my time to being an Activist. I am now a Co-Chair on Repro For All's National Action Council and also the Lead on MoveOn's Petition's Team. And I still work for about 4 other organizations including Moms Demand. I deal with my medical issues knowing that I have the strength to overcome whatever God throws at me and, so far, I have. As my brother told me, "sis, I think you found your calling." And my daughter and grandson, and usually I am the one telling my kids and grandkids this, said, "mom/mammier, I am so proud of you for doing the work that you do, thank you." Shannon, you inspire me even more each time I read one of your stories. Thank you.
In the last couple of years, I’ve been practicing altruism and - in the process - finding my people just like this post described! This was so validating to read. Thank you for the reminder; this is evergreen advice.
A lot of wisdom here. When I see others disappointed in where they are in their lives, I recommend volunteer work. It's helped me after several failed relationships, and after losing my parents and father-in-law in just 14 months. Without a doubt, being a voice for others has a renewing effect. And the sharing of values is uplifting. But empathy is the hero-maker. ✊♥️
Wow, this piece is on fire! I could not agree more! Thank you for publishing this spark!
I found my people, my like-minded humans across the country who became my community in the BuyNothing Project, their own independent App is worldwide.
Big actions are wonderful, daily small actions of altruism are also powerful and serendipitous. Practicing public gratitude while staying true to my core of "leave it better than I found it", the BuyNothing App is a green gift economy that has changed the way I can do daily life on and off the playa!

Yes, find meaning in service to others. Especially now and the next 48 months...
