In America, we’re celebrating Thanksgiving and, given the election outcome, it might be a day filled with anxiety and tension. I’ve found that gratitude, which is what this day should be about, is a profound way to cultivate mindfulness, compassion and patience. So, today I’d like to share our gratitude with one another.
I’ll kick us off with a few things I’m grateful for this year: the health of my family; the love and support I get from people in my real life and here online; the ability to keep so many amazing books in one place on my Kindle; all of the new friends I met on the campaign trail; my new decadent decision to have one glass of champagne every night with dinner; all of the technology that makes life easier.
👉 And for today’s Thursday thread, here’s what I’d like to know:
What is something you’re grateful for in your life right now?
How do you practice gratitude in your life?
And be sure to connect with your fellow community members in the comments!
Welcome to the Thursday Threads, a weekly chance for us to connect with one another in the comments. Join me and other readers as we navigate important discussions. And a note: a difference of opinion is always okay, being unkind to one another is not. Let’s keep these conversations respectful.
Today I’m grateful that I’m still on this earth, willing and able to work for truth, decency, kindness, justice. Gratitude doesn’t come as easily as it used to. As a blue dot in a sea of Florida MAGA red, I’ve found a better way to cope. Every time I see one of those horrid signs or flags I loudly (loudly is the best part) say something I am grateful for.
I am grateful for my Irish máthair who planted seeds of faith, faced fear with fortitude, and possessed a will of steel and the heart of our ancient warriors. Thank you to the many activists and grassroots organizers for your efforts and mentorship. Today I remain steadfast in a belief that practicing gratitude and taking meaningful action can enable us to navigate this political “hellscape” while preserving our Democracy. Finally, my lasting appreciation to Kamala and Tim for delivering a glimpse of leadership defined by strength, empathy, and a belief in truth and the “rule of law”.
